Woman. Student. Active. Meticulous (Maybe too much). Nervous. Anxious. Family. Outgoing. Optimistic. Planner (Constantly). Nature lover. Respect. Discipline. Dancer. Musical. Determined. Doubtful (even when choosing between regular or raspberry lemonade). Communications Intern. Etc. Etc…
There’s a countless list of adjectives, categories, values, virtues or flaws, which are nothing more than words. The paragraph above is just a mixed group that could describe a part of me. Maybe I should’ve wrote more or remove some. I’m still trying to know myself, at least in the most sincere and realistic way as possible.
This year started extremely fast and I was only thinking on stablishing new goals or preparing myself for some projects…obviously making my characteristic scribbles on a little agenda I carry everywhere.
However, a few days ago I was at this certain meeting back in this Sonoran beautiful and small city; And during the miscellaneous conversation, a funny question popped up, followed by others more complex. Without more details about the setting, here is the question:
―Describe yourself in just three words, and choose the three main values in your life.
I took some time and then answered my three words. The interesting part of this was thinking and choosing how to describe myself based on that simple number. If you want to get it right, you must be sure of what you want to express, and be humble, honest and confident enough to admit your strengths and weaknesses. But in a world where everything is behind a screen, where we worry ourselves over this virtual image, this perfect profile instead of the real one. Where your looks matter more than ever, and don’t forget how important it is to know what “others” think… In a time like this, let’s admit how hard can become to know ourselves, honestly.
If you believe this is extremely easy, well, go share your answers with someone you trust and would tell you the truth. They ’ll help you see if you’re exaggerating a bit or you do know yourself. If it seems somehow complicated, try to use some time to think about it.
Clearly, I did not made this up, neither is an innovation or so. These questions are frequently applied in job interviews, psychometric tests or similar surveys. All though, I think this is quite interesting.
Those three values you choose, which in some way guide your life, and those three words describe everything about you. There is no need for more, no need of arguments, explanations, just three and three… No more.
The reason why I chose to talk about it today, is just for sharing this simple and brief challenge to know ourselves more, but it sure also helps us to know others beyond their tweets or their more recent picture on Instagram.
I’m still looking for my best three & three words. But… seriously, have you thought about it yet? Which are your three words and your three values? What if someone else selects them for you, what would they say?
