We talk so much about our work, because for most of us, it occupies a large part of our time if not… all of our time. However, a job position does not define us as people. We are much more than the description of the role and the activities we perform.
A job position is certainly important. It takes most of our daily time. It’s a way of creating new opportunities. It adds experience and learnings. It improves our abilities and development, as well as professional and personal growth. It is generally the main source of income that allows us to subsist and enjoy other benefits. However, a job is not fully who you are. Working for a certain company does not define you. It does not define your values, nor your talents, nor your essence, nor your full potential as a human being. For this reason, this post is to remind you that we are more than a job position. Way more than that!
Times have definitely changed and the pandemic reminds us that nothing is so predictable, or completely safe. Under this context many people lost their jobs. But this doesn’t mean that life is over. It will be difficult, but there will always be a solution. Being contemporary also means to create a «plan B». You’ll see that something better will come. We’re just adapting. Sometimes it is necessary to take two steps back, to be able to jump further.
Remember: you are not your job. Companies cannot always see 100% of your potential. Even if they saw it, it is not definitive that they will be able to maintain your role or justify that position under extreme circumstances like the ones we are experiencing.
Enjoy those good things that are in front of you. Enjoy your family, friends, even your pet or that little plant that continues to bloom near the window. Don’t stop living, because of a job. Give yourself permission to enjoy, distract yourself, take a break, and slow down if necessary. Jobs are like houses: there will always be someone looking for it, and at the same time there will always be someone hiring, buying, building…and as they say “there’s enough for everybody”.
Before ending, I’d like to share with you this lessons learned from Brigette Hyacinth, international keynote speaker, bestselling author and thought leader on Leadership, HR, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Transformation.
Lessons learned:
1. You can be the best candidate and still not get selected.
2. If you didn’t get the job, it was never meant for you.
3. You weren’t rejected, you were redirected.
4. «Your value does not decrease based upon someone’s inability to see your worth.»
5. Believe in yourself and keep trying, the right door will open for you.
